Types of Machines Used In Grain Processing:

There are two types of machines that are used in grain processing: wet and dry. The wet type is better known as milling and dry is called grinding. Wet rice grains have a high moisture content (15% -18%). Milling removes most of its outer covering through shelling, winnowing and dehulling leaving behind brown rice which has around 10% moisture content after milling.

On average about 40% more output can be obtained from milled rice because it contains more nutrients than unmilled ones. Whereas 20-25% energy input can be saved by using mills instead of human labour for cleaning rice. Polishing and Parboiling are specialized treatments carried out during milling process for many varieties. Polishing involves removing outer layers for both white & red polished riceâ€™s.
